You may find it helpful to look at the brain in 3 areas, searching each in turn for changes in size, shape, symmetry, density, displacement, gray-white differentiation, integrity, and the presence of lesions.
Lobes, Gyri, and Corona Radiata
Basal structures including basal ganglia, internal capsules, thalami, corpus callosum
Cerebellum and brain stem
As you become more comfortable and experienced in neuro/psych, you can expand the number of structures you can confidently find and name on CT (and MR) images. However, you can read most scans very well even with the first level of localization knowledge summarized in the list above...so long as you are attentive and systematic!

This scan shows an acute 2 cm ovoid intracerebral hemorrhage in the posterior part of right superior frontal gyrus, enlarged precentral and central sulci on the right, and chronic left precentral and posterior superior frontal gray and white matter atrophy related to prior left ICH.
