Carotid Endarterectomy
The Problem:

 What We Do:
PRE: Ancef 1g IV on call to OR
POST: HOB elevated
NPO first night
Patients go to NeuroSurg ward post op

If there is any hematoma post op ... esp. one that begins to obstruct the airway...get the patient re-intubated by anaesthesia (earlier rather than later)... resist the temptation to reverse hte heparin with protamine. Again... any new neurological deficit ... get a CT head ... to R/O intracranial bleed vs. stroke.
